Posted: November 14, 2024

Students from all levels of Newport News Public Schools participated in the 5th annual More Than A Princess Girls' Empowerment Conference on November 8 and 9 at Woodside High School.

An empowerment rally for grades three through twelve was held on Friday evening, followed by a day of activities for middle and high school students on Saturday. NNPS Youth Development organized and hosted the action-packed event.

Participants included students in Youth Development's Blossom program for elementary school students in grades three through five, Bloom program for middle school students and Flourish program for high school students. Empowerment coaches who lead school-based programs for each of the groups and more than 100 community volunteers joined NNPS staff to provide a variety of offerings.

Saturday's events included an opening session on personal branding, body image, and the impact of social media on mental health; empowerment workshops on positive self-image, navigating relationships, financial literacy and interviewing skills; and an activities fair that included science, technology, engineering and math/robotics sponsored by the Brooks Crossing Innovation Lab, a hair braiding and nails lesson and competition, jewelry making and a paint party. Official sponsor BayPort Credit Union provided funding and its representatives also not only led workshops, but joined students on stage for line dancing.
