Posted: February 6, 2025
Detailing their creative fundraisers and how their schools' students joined together in the effort, Newport News Public Schools students gave brief presentations on their efforts towards the 2025 United Way of the Virginia Peninsula campaign.
NNPS students raised more than $17,000 for the United Way, which supports organizations helping citizens needing assistance across the community. Student representatives from each school announced their school's total and presented checks to United Way officials at a celebration February 6 in the School Board Administration Building Auditorium.
"Because of your donations and support to this campaign, thousands of individuals and families across the Virginia Peninsula will receive the services and resources that they need to get them through a time of crisis," said Allie Byce, corporate and community relationships manager at United Way of the Virginia Peninsula.
"Because of you, children will succeed in school, families will gain financial stability, and the health of our neighbors and our entire community will improve. Thank you to the Newport News Public Schools and to each and every one of you for helping us to change lives in our community."
Students, family members and officials from each school were on hand for the presentations and announcement of the grand total contributed.
"Our total this afternoon, which was over $17,000, really shows that our school community is very committed to making a difference in the lives of all of the people in our greater community across Newport News," said Tracy Brooks, NNPS special assistant to the superintendent.
"You are our next generation of leaders and, as I said, you’re off to a great start and we're so proud of you."
