State Delegate Shelly Simonds presented a commending resolution to Woodside High School's theatre magnet program for earning second place in the 2023-2024 Virginia High School League Theatre State Championships Class 5 Ensemble competition.
In presenting the resolution on June 5, Simonds said she was pleased to recognize the teacher and students for their excellence in presenting "The Struggles" at the annual competition with other high school theatre programs across Virginia. It was Woodside's first win after three consecutive years in the competition.
Students from the winning theatre troupe, 2023-2024 theatre teacher Alison Hall, Arts and Communications Magnet Program Administrator Amy Insley, and Visual and Performing Arts Instructional Supervisor Katie SheehanSmith accepted the resolution. Although not able to attend, Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell sent her congratulations to the students and staff.
School Board chair Lisa Surles-Law and School Board member Maritsa Alger also commended the staff and students for their dedication to the arts.
The Arts and Communications Magnet Program offers Newport News students the opportunity for intensive study in the arts as part of a full and well-balanced academic program, according to SheehanSmith. Students participate in many showcase events in which they apply what they learn. Through these events, students gain experience in the teamwork that brings creative events to life.
