Posted: June 11, 2025

Newport News Public Schools Youth Development Department awarded schools at all levels who demonstrated the program's core values in outstanding ways this past school year.

Department representatives presented the brand new Vanguard Award and 2024-2025 STAND Awards during surprise visits on June 10.

McIntosh Elementary School became the first school to receive the Vanguard Award. Principal Camisha Davis, Youth Development Lead Tanya Belin, staff, students and families all were credited for McIntosh being chosen.

The Vanguard Award is given to schools who lead the way in the development of new and innovative ways to promote positive relationships, experiences and environments for all students through Youth Development and Family and Community Engagement. They also have a strong demonstrated commitment to NNPS-sponsored programs such as Blossom, RISE! and Live Well.

STAND Awards are given for demonstrated commitment to the district's anti-bullying and harassment STAND program principles of promoting a positive school culture and creating a sense of belonging for all students.

This year's STAND recipients are Hilton Elementary School, Knollwood Meadows Elementary School, Crittenden Middle School and Woodside High School.
