Clean School Awards shine spotlight on crucial NNPS employees

Highlighting the positive impact clean and well-maintained school buildings have on students and staff, Newport News Public Schools awarded its annual Clean School Awards for 2025 to star custodial staff members on June 18.

Marshall Early Childhood Center's crew of Charmin Anthony-Wells, Laura Anthony and Ernest Johnson received the award for early childhood centers. Among elementary schools, the custodial team of James Brothers, Ernestine Crawford and Justine Spratley at Palmer Elementary School was honored.

For middle schools, the Mary Passage Middle School team of Michael Castillo, Calvin Curry, Monte Haney, Malcolm Hopson, Latasha Tyler and Vanita Warren received the award. Heritage High School's crew of Peggy Adams, Demetrius Battle, Kyndal Coles, Allen Davis, Robin Fitcherr, Shavonne Grey, Timothy Johnson, Lydell Ruffin, Frederick Smith, Samuel Smith, Destry White and Jessica Wooten was chosen for the top honor in the high school category.

For alternative schools, Point Option's custodial team of Gaye Sinclair and Jalen Hodges was recognized.
