Kyla Leggette, a senior at Menchville High School, will serve as the student representative to the Newport News School Board for the 2025-26 school year.
Leggette brings a wealth of leadership and team building skills to the position. Among her numerous activities, she is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Color Guard for Marching Band, Model United Nations and archery teams. She is the founder of the Sunflower Children's Hospital of The Kings' Daughters Junior Circle and volunteers for several community organizations.
Leggette was honored at the Newport News Education Foundation's Salute to Success dinner in the spring as the top eleventh grade student at Menchville for 2024-2025.
"As I'm sworn in today, I'm extremely honored and grateful for this opportunity," Leggette said after taking her Oath of Commitment at the August 19 School Board meeting.
"I promise to strive to ensure every student's voice, experiences and concerns are honored and valued to ensure we strive to a better future."
Last school year she served on the Student Advisory Group on Education, which is a group of high school students who meet with the superintendent regularly so that she can get their perspective and personal insight on various initiatives and issues. Leggette is on SAGE again this school year and will serve as co-chair with Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell.
