NNPS archers stand out at state qualifying tournament with three teams advancing

Three Newport News Public Schools archery teams and six individual archers won their divisions at the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) State Qualifying Tournament on January 10 at An Achievable Dream Middle & High School.

Menchville High School placed first in the high school division with a score of 3074, with Gildersleeve Middle School's score of 3007 notching first place among middle schools and Richneck Elementary School totaling 2426 to take first place among elementary schools.

Woodside High School, Ella Fitzgerald Middle School, B.C. Charles Elementary School and Yates Elementary School also finished in the top three in their respective divisions.

Teams and individuals with qualifying scores will advance to the NASP State Tournament in Doswell on March 7.

  • Male: 1. Dexter London (266), Gildersleeve; 2. Landon Coleman (257), Gildersleeve; 3. Christopher Parish (254), Ella Fitzgerald

Elementary schools:

  • Female: 1. Hope Horton (243), B.C. Charles; 2. Violet Singletary (235), B.C. Charles; 3. Darlyn Aponte (231), Richneck
  • Male: 1. Rylan Lewis (229), Richneck; 2. Benjamin Salgado (223), Richneck; 3. Anthony Raulerson (213), B.C. Charles
