Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has awarded the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Newport News School Board for its annual budget document for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2025.
In addition, the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) awarded Newport News Public Schools' budget its Meritorious Budget Award.
For the GFOA award, the budget document was judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program.
The award is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental budgeting and its attainment represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management, according to GFOA. The award reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meeting the highest principles of governmental budgeting.
In order to receive the budget award, entrants had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well an entity's budget serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.
Budget documents must be rated proficient in all four categories, and in 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award.
To earn the ASBO award, NNPS staff preparing the budget document met the criteria of demonstrating skills in developing an effective budget presentation, compliance with clear budget presentation guidelines, a commitment to the community through a reader-friendly budget document and adherence to nationally recognized budget presentation standards, according to the ASBO.
