Representatives from each student body in Newport News Public Schools presented their contributions to the 2026 United Way of the Virginia Peninsula campaign at the United Way Student Celebration on February 12 at Crittenden Middle School.

Students raised a total of $21,388.04 through their school-wide fundraising efforts. They described the various sales and activities they created to collect small donations that added up to make a big impact.

Students, family members and officials from each school were on hand for the presentations and announcement of the grand total contributed.

“In Newport News Public Schools, we are encouraged to stand together for our community,” said Kyla Leggette, a senior at Menchville High School and the 2025-2026 student representative to the School Board, in her opening remarks.

“Through the United Way student campaign, students are living out that pledge by showing kindness, creating positive school culture and giving back to support others.”

Acting Chief Schools Officer Dr. Wayne Smith welcomed attendees on behalf of school division leadership.

“This morning is so special because as leaders in your schools, you have initiated the concept of giving,” Smith said. “Giving is very important in today’s society because it strengthens our very communities.”

Charvalla West, president and chief executive officer of the United Way of the Virginia Peninsula, described her excitement in getting a chance to thank students in her first opportunity since starting her job.

“Every year, you step up and you show up for your community in ways that set the standard for what’s happening across the Peninsula,” West said, thanking NNPS students and leadership for their continued partnership with the United Way, which supports a variety of organizations helping citizens needing assistance across the community.
