2026 NNPS Senior Rally gives students a chance to celebrate finishing strong

Posted: March 5, 2026

Seniors making the stretch run to graduation in June took time to focus, hear words of wisdom and have a lot of fun as Newport News Public Schools held its Senior Rally for the Class of 2026 on March 4 at Christopher Newport University's Freeman Center.

A total of 1,550 seniors from each of the city's high schools joined together for a show of school spirit and senior pride. They were decked out in school colors on everything from face paint to tutus, rally towels to headwear of all varieties.

Students visited with representatives from 40 vendors representing post-secondary opportunities including universities, businesses, organizations and military branches.

"The School Board, the superintendent and the school division leadership team are proud of everything that you have accomplished these past couple of years," said Newport News School Board Vice Chair Maritsa Alger, opening the event following a unity cheer featuring cheerleaders from all schools.

"You have shown resilience. You have shown dedication. You have unbreakable spirit; even when the road wasn't always easy."

CNU Director of Undergraduate Admission Curtis Davidson gave greetings on behalf of the university and encouraging words. NNPS Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell assured seniors that the end of their K-12 years is in sight.

"You started this journey; you've hit the milestone," Mitchell said. "We need to finish strong. We have 1,550 seniors and we expect every one of you to walk across that stage. If you need help; ask for help. We are here to support you."

Kyla Leggette, a Menchville High School senior and 2025-2026 student representative to the School Board, provided introductions for three NNPS recent alumni who shared thoughts. Woodside High School 2022 graduate Nolan Sanchez who attends Virginia Commonwealth University, Warwick High School 2023 graduate Yasmiere Burke who attends CNU as a Community Captain, and Woodside 2025 graduate Ce'Jae Robinson who is enlisting in the Army, shared their stories of transitioning from high school to their next steps.

They encouraged seniors to savor their last few months of high school, but to be hopeful and thoughtful about all that the future and the wider world has to offer. The alumni also gave tips on how to navigate some of the challenges graduates may face.

As the event transitioned to its games and spirit contest portion, a DJ and emcees from various schools continued to keep the dance music pumping and the hype level high. Points were awarded to schools for their performance in the fun festivities and for school spirit, with Menchville winning first place and taking home the new spirit stick award.
