NNPS archers make strong showing at state tournament

Newport News Public Schools archery teams and individual archers performed well at the Virginia National Archery in the Schools Program State Tournament on March 7 in Doswell.
Multiple teams and individuals qualified for the U.S. Eastern Nationals May 7-9 in Louisville, Kentucky.
"These strong performances highlight the continued growth and success of the NNPS archery program, with multiple teams advancing to compete on the national stage this spring," said Peggy Harriman, instructional specialist for Health and Physical Education.
At the high school level, Menchville High School placed 5th overall with a score of 3153, qualifying the team for nationals.
In the middle school division, Gildersleeve Middle School finished 7th with a score of 3052, also earning a qualification for nationals. Ella Fitzgerald Middle School placed 9th with a score of 2820.
At the elementary level, B.C. Charles Elementary School placed 5th with a score of 2511, qualifying for nationals. Richneck Elementary School finished 6th with a score of 2498.
Additional individual competitors represented Woodside High School, Denbigh High School, Crittenden Middle School and Yates Elementary School.
Several NNPS archers achieved top 10 individual finishes and personal best scores:

Elyssa Wright, Menchville High School, shot a personal best 282, placing 6th among all high school girls and 2nd among ninth grade girls.

Fenton Weymouth-German, Menchville High School, shot a personal best 279, placing 5th among all high school boys and 2nd among ninth grade boys.

Melissa Hampton, B.C. Charles Elementary, shot a personal best 258, placing 2nd among elementary girls and 1st among fourth grade girls.

Violet Singletary, B.C. Charles Elementary, shot a personal best 237, placing 10th among elementary girls and 7th among fifth grade girls.
