Posted: April 24, 2026

The Newport News Public Schools Youth Development Department held its annual recognition for students and student organizations that exemplify the characteristics of student leadership and volunteerism. The STAR -- Students Taking Action and Responsibility -- Awards are given each year.

During the Secondary STAR Awards Banquet on April 23 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, middle and high school students representing clubs and organizations were honored for their leadership and volunteerism.

This year, an expo with displays created by each school was added to the event. Guests were able to browse the informative booths prior to the presentation event and luncheon.

Aliyah Davis, a senior at Warwick High School, served as mistress of ceremonies.

“The STAR Awards serve as an annual showcase where Newport News Public Schools Youth Development proudly honors student groups that have made exemplary contributions to their schools and the broader community,” Davis said.

“Youth empowerment and meaningful contribution remain at the heart of NNPS Youth Development. This mission comes to life through more than 1,100 student organizations that are actively engaged in our schools each day. Through their leadership, service and commitment, these students exemplify what it means to make a positive and lasting impact.”

Attendees included Newport News School Board Chairman Dr. Terri Best, School Board Vice Chairman Maritsa Alger, Board member Gary Hunter and Newport News Fire Department Captain Andre Dorsey.

Featured students who presented the awards were Ashton Cobb, an eighth grader at Hines Middle School; Novalea Ojeda, an eighth grader at Crittenden Middle School; Hopeton Bailey, an eleventh grader at An Achievable Dream High School and John Higgins, a senior at Heritage High School.

“Today, our STAR Award honorees, you remind us what is possible when young people are given the opportunity, the support and the trust to lead,” Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell said in her closing remarks. “You are not just participants in your schools, but you really are difference makers.

“You are setting the standard for what leadership, character and service looks like in Newport News. As I visit schools, I see it every day. Our students are stepping up, supporting one another and leading with purpose.”
