Posted: April 29, 2026

The Newport News Public Schools Youth Development Department held its annual STAR Awards recognition for elementary school students who demonstrate the characteristics of student leadership and volunteerism. The STAR-Students Taking Action and Responsibility-Awards are given each year.

Students from each NNPS elementary school were honored for their leadership and volunteerism at the Elementary STAR Awards Expo and Luncheon on April 28 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

Delegate Shelly Simonds, School Board Chairman Dr. Terri Best and Vice Chairman Maritsa Alger were among those in attendance.

Kelsey Auxier, a senior at Menchville High School, served as mistress of ceremonies.

Auxier and Rosangelo Velasquez Orozco, a fifth grade student at Newsome Park Elementary School, provided reflections and Riverside Elementary School third grade student William Shackleford III led the Pledge of Allegiance.

“Being involved in leadership and school spirit has taught me the importance of showing up and representing my school well,” Auxier said. “These experiences have pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me develop new friendships and create moments of joy that make school a place where everyone wants to be.”

K’halil Johnson, a senior at Warwick High School, and Taryn Wheeler, a senior at Woodside High School, presented the awards.

“Students, I thank you for what you do, and for serving as role models,” said Acting Chief Schools Officer Dr. Wayne Smith during his closing remarks. “Being selected to represent your school is a great accomplishment.

“It means that you are committed to improving the community around you. It is a pleasure to acknowledge all that you have done in support of your school and community.”
