Two Newport News Public Schools students placed in the 2026 Virginia School Boards Association Tidewater Region Student Art Contest on April 23.

Deer Park Elementary School fourth grader Kingston Brown-El won first place in the Elementary School Division and Woodside High School eleventh grader Troy Dam took third place in the High School Division.

Brown-El's piece advanced to the state competition that will take place in early June.

The Tidewater Region art contest was held in conjunction with the regional spring networking forum for area school board members, who judged the entries.

The VSBA Regional Art Contest was established in 1989 to promote the artistic talents of Virginia's public school students. For each of the nine VSBA regions, a winner is chosen for the elementary, middle and high school levels. The winning art is framed and displayed in the VSBA offices in Charlottesville.
