STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Warwick High School 12th Grader Aliyah Davis
Plants seeds of positivity
Published May 13, 2026
Aliyah Davis has a passion for planting, growing and harvesting the abundance of the care and labor that go into agriculture.
Gardening is one of the many activities that have enriched her K-12 years and helped her grow and flourish. Davis, who will graduate from Warwick High School in June, has expanded that idea of investment to include herself and others.
She is a student leader who wants to see her classmates succeed as much as herself.
“When you do something that isn’t just centered on propelling yourself forward, it gives you a better world view about it,” Davis said. “Because not just one person makes the world go. It’s about a teamwork and collaboration kind of thing. It’s really developed those skills within me and for me.”
Davis has taken high school classes in the International Baccalaureate and Governor’s Health Sciences Academy programs.
She is on the Student Advisory Group on Education, and has been heavily involved in volunteer service with the Key Club and Youth Volunteer Corps, and the swim team for the past four years. Davis particularly values monthly visits to read to students at a neighboring elementary school.
Her main activity is gardening, and she also spends time reading and playing the violin, piano and harp.
Davis helps her parents with growing food on a Gloucester property, took an agriculture course with her father at Virginia State University, and also attended a summer program there. She learned the importance of growing and taking control of one’s own food and values the lessons learned.
Davis came up with a concept to turn green spaces at Warwick into a student-run garden that is in the works.
“It’s really important to be able to do activities and other things outside of academics,” Davis said. “It’s meant the world to me; I’ve really loved it. Being involved in swim, you get this really cool group of people that do the same sport as you.
“So they know the time, the dedication, the long practices. They go through it with you so it really bonds more. And I was able to find friends through that, some really good long-term friends.”
Her favorite thing about NNPS is the care that teachers have for students, as well as the pride that the students have in themselves and their school, she said. Davis remembers being uplifted by a hallway parade of students and teachers from every grade cheering her and her classmates on prior to taking their first Standards of Learning tests.
“I have a love for helping people and I really like to see people smile,” Davis said. “And I love seeing the impact that I have on the world be positive and to take people in a positive direction. Just being kind is one of the most important things.”
