Students will ultimately be the winners after community members who played, contributed to and supported the 5th Annual Newport News Public Schools & Newport News Education Foundation Golf Classic at Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort on June 11.

More than 60 golfers spent a warm morning playing a round of golf, socializing, participating in a gift drawing and an awards lunch.

Generous financial support of the golf tournament will be used to fund the important work of the foundation, which among other initiatives sponsors the annual Salute to Success celebration of top high school students, awards the Wayne D. Lett Scholarship and Virginia Educators Credit Union/Glasofer Scholarship, provides mini-grants to teachers, and fosters relationships between local business partners and the school division.

Brown Edwards Certified Public Accountants and Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort provided valuable contributions by serving as Bronze level sponsors for the tournament.

The foursome of Fabian Davis, Chris Trotter, Brian Gould and David Williams, Jr., placed first and Joe Phillips, Scott Maw, Thomas Watters and Scott Gillis finished second. Anthony Baldwin was awarded Closest to the Pin, Leslie Coates won for Women's Longest Drive and Watters for Men's Longest Drive.

"Thank you to all of our golfers, sponsors, Kiln Creek Golf Club and Resort, and the Newport News Public Schools team for making this another successful tournament," said Dale Mingilton, foundation and corporate partnership liaison. "We appreciate all of the support that will go directly to our students and staff."
