Importance of clean schools shines at NNPS Clean School Awards

Emphasizing the crucial role that clean school buildings play in student and staff success, Newport News Public Schools awarded its annual Clean School Awards for 2026 to standout custodial crews on June 17.
The importance and value of maintaining clean schools includes promoting student health, improved learning environments, enhanced safety, helping students and staff build positive habits, creating a positive impression, protecting school property and boosting morale.
Marshall Early Childhood Center’s crew of Charmin Anthony-Wells, Laura Anthony and Ernest Johnson received the award for early childhood centers. Among elementary schools, the custodial team of Avery Boyce, Cynthia Goodwin, Tommie Hill, and Antoine Lewis at Richneck Elementary School was honored.
For middle schools, the An Achievable Dream Middle and High School team of Justin Gatling, Imani Hicks, Jennifer Morgan-Gayle, Beverly Phillips and Timothy Radcliffe received the award. Warwick High School’s crew of Edwin Allman, Ernest Bond, Yvonne Eaton, Shaniqua Hardy, Robert Hicks, Antwan Lewis, Darnell Mackey, Donald Page and Darrell West was chosen for the top honor in the high school category.
For alternative schools, the Governor’s Health Sciences Academy custodial team of Demetrice Nelson, Dianne Pickett and Eric Wynn was recognized.
