NNPS summer graduates proudly receive diplomas
Published August 5, 2026
Newport News Public Schools graduates for summer 2026 were presented with their diplomas at a ceremony on August 4 at Heritage High School.
A total of 51 students from the city’s five high schools combined completed their diploma requirements to graduate this summer.
School Board Chairman Dr. Terri Best, Superintendent Dr. Michele Mitchell and Chief Schools Officer Dr. Eleanor Blowe spoke at the ceremony. Principals for each high school presented diplomas to their overjoyed graduates.
Jeremiah Hairston, supervisor of School Security, sang the National Anthem.
“They say that smooth seas don’t make skilled sailors,” Blowe said. “If that’s true, then the 51 graduates sitting before us tonight are ready to navigate anything that the world throws at them.
“Every high school journey has its twists and turns. But summer graduates, you have a special kind of pride. You didn’t just cross the finish line, you fought for every single inch of it. Tonight is honoring the relentless driving spirit that you’ve shown.”
She described the various unique situations students completing their degrees this summer were in, covering all types of life situations, circumstances and challenges. Despite all, she said, students accomplished all of the requirements to be able to turn their tassels at the ceremony’s completion.
Family members, friends and community members cheered, applauded and posed with their grads for photos afterwards. There were smiles all around, and more than a few tears, as that all-important piece of paper--a diploma--was shared, admired and lauded.
“Today, I wish you much success in all of your future endeavors,” Best said. “I know you will continue to make us proud.”
Mitchell emphasized the determination graduates showed and will carry forward.
“You chose to keep going,” Mitchell said. “That decision speaks volumes about your character.
“It tells us that you know how to persevere, to overcome adversity and to finish what you started. Those qualities will serve you long after tonight.”
