Six inducted into Newport News Track & Field Hall of Fame

Newport News Public Schools hosted its Track & Field Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on March 21 at the Administration Building. The event, held in conjunction with the 42nd Annual Conn-Madden Relays, celebrated the accomplishments of former Heritage High School standouts Timothy Payne, Qhiyal Towns, Angela Tubman, Shirelle Linzy, Jhala Williams and JahNiyah Thomas.

A special recognition and plaque unveiling took place for Ray Price, NNPS telecommunications supervisor, for his induction into the 2023 High School Hall of Fame by the Virginia High School League.

The Conn-Madden Relays, named for Newport News coaching legends Julie Conn and Thaddeus Madden, will take place April 6 at Todd Stadium.

4A State Outdoor 110m Hurdles State Champion 2017
Heritage High School

Timothy Payne, a 2018 Heritage High School graduate, won both the Indoor 55m hurdles and the Outdoor 110m hurdles state championships during his junior year. Timothy also played football for the Hurricanes. He was a 1st-Team All-Region wide receiver as a senior at Heritage and went on to play football and run track at Lafayette College. He transferred to the College of William & Mary in 2019, where he did not compete in either sport. He did, however, win the W&M Quarterback Club's Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year award.

Heritage High School

Qhiyal Towns, a 2018 Heritage High School graduate, was a four-time 4A state champion in high school track, a state record holder in the 55 meter dash and 100 meter dash and an AAU Junior Olympic All-American. He competed on the University of North Carolina track and field team, graduating in 2022 with a degree in exercise science. At UNC, Towns was chosen all-Atlantic Coast Conference in 2019-20, qualified for the NCAA East Regional, set a school Outdoor record in the 60 meters and ran the second-fastest Outdoor 100 meter time in school history. His fondest high school memory is winning his first state championship while setting a new state record and he listed Coach Ray Pollard as his most influential role model.

Angela Tubman

Heritage High School

Angela Tubman was a member of the 2019 Class 4 Indoor State Champion 4X200M Relay Team. She graduated from Heritage in 2020 and entered Norfolk State University, from which she will graduate in 2024 with a psychology degree. Her fondest memory from high school is staying connected to her school and teammates by staying after school daily for practices. She names Coach Jacqueline Bateman as her most influential role model.

Shirelle Linzy

Achievable Dream High School

Shirelle Linzy is a 2019 graduate of Achievable Dream High School. She is the second member of the 2019 Class 4 Indoor State Champion 4X200M Relay Team at Heritage High School. She was also the Regional Champion in the triple jump during the 2019 Indoor Track season. After graduating from high school, Linzy competed for the track programs at Norfolk State University and Oakland University.

Heritage High School

Jhala Williams is the third member of the 2019 Class 4 4X200M Relay Team State Champions, with a finishing time of 1:47.08 seconds. She is a 2019 Heritage High School graduate. Her first track meet is her fondest high school memory, confirming that was to be her sport in high school. Choir Director Arcelia Simmons was her most influential role model in high school.

Heritage High School

The fourth member of the 2019 Class 4 4X200M Relay Team State Champions is JahNiyah Thomas. Upon graduating in 2020, she entered Howard University to compete on their track team. She currently is a student assistant coach with the track and field team at Howard while majoring in allied health science. Her fondest high school memory is being a part of the track team and traveling to the Penn Relays.

2023 High School Hall of Fame
NNPS Telecommunications supervisor

Price was recognized by the Virginia High School League for his unyielding commitment to the promotion, broadcast and streaming of high school athletics in NNPS. During the VHSL induction ceremony, he was noted for setting the standard for high school sports broadcasting throughout the Commonwealth.

During his 30-year tenure in the school division, with the support of his student videographers, Price has coordinated, produced and directed more than 150 live high school football games featuring thousands of student-athletes in competition. In recent years, he has expanded sports coverage to feature basketball, wrestling, volleyball and middle school sports.
