Newport News Public Schools welcomes all our new teachers for the 2024-2025 school year!

Whether this is your first year in education or you’ve chosen our division to continue your career, we are glad to have you. This website contains important information about your welcome week, which runs August 5-14. During New Teacher Welcome Week, you can expect to learn more about our division, employee benefits, curriculum, technology, and more!

Monday, August 5

Welcome Day

Welcome! We hope your first day in Newport News Public Schools is a great one. Here in NNPS, we pride ourselves in being a school division that prepares all students to be college, career and citizen-ready. Our teachers and leaders rise to this challenge daily, and we are excited you joined our team to be part of this important work.

Please report directly to your school site today. Your day will begin with a welcome breakfast with your administration. Your day will be divided into two parts.

  • Part I:
    You will start your day at your assigned school. After enjoying breakfast with your fellow new colleagues, you may have an opportunity to visit your new classroom, learn more about your school, meet your mentor or lead teacher, or take a tour of your building. Look to your principal for more specific guidance.

  • Part II:
    Then, join us at 1:00 pm at Heritage HS as our superintendent, Dr. Michele Mitchell, and other leaders welcome all new staff members.

NNPS Human Resources 101: Your Career Partner

Learn more about the benefits, health plans, retirement options, and more that are available to you as an employee with NNPS. Topics for the day will include:

Licensure: Our Licensure Specialist will review important licensure requirements and updates, along with information about tuition reimbursement.

Being a Professional Teacher in NNPS: Our Employee Relations Team will discuss TDEP Standard 6: Professionalism and what professionalism looks like in NNPS.

NNPS Insurance Options: Our Benefits Team will explain (in detail) Newport News Public Schools' integrated health, dental, vision, and benefit plans.

Total Compensation & Benefits: Our Benefits Team will explain additional benefits to include FMLA, pay options, legal services, sick leave, short term disability, life insurance, employee wellness program, long term care, and Employee Self Service.

Retirement: Our Benefits Team will share information on VRS plans and supplemental retirement options available through NNPS.

Technology in NNPS

Today you will learn more about the technology systems and tools you will need for a successful school year. Our team of Instructional Technology Coaches will provide training on platforms such as Canvas, Google Suite, Synergy, and more! ITCs will deliver information and resources to ensure a smooth start to your year.

Technology sessions will be differentiated by level:

  • Elementary staff will report to Kiln Creek Elementary.
  • Secondary staff will report to Heritage High.

School-Based Activities

Today you will be at your assigned school all day. You may want to process your new learning with a colleague/mentor, use the time to set up your classroom, and/or meet with your mentor or lead teacher. Look to your principal for more specific guidance.

School-Based Activities & iNNovate Conference

Today is the final day of our NNPS New Teacher Welcome Week. You've met many new people and engaged in much learning over the past week. Use the day productively to help you get started for the new year. You may choose to remain at your school site to accomplish tasks, or you may elect to participate in our NNPS iNNovate Conference. Advance registration for iNNovate is required. Visit the iNNovate Conference website to learn more.
