Secondary Social Studies at NNPS

Our Vision

History and Social Science is the quest to understand the human condition in all its varied and messy ways.

It is essential that students examine their past while acknowledging that it neither defines their present nor limits their future. Students respect the humanity of those with differing perspectives while acknowledging that not all perspectives are equal or valid. Students are increasingly inspired to take an active role in recognizing injustices and correcting them.

Our Goals

Our history and social science curriculum is organized around the following goals that guide instruction and assessment for our students to develop as analytical thinkers in history, geography, civics, and economics to prepare students for informed participation in shaping the nation’s and the world’s future.

Students will:

  • See themselves and their personal experiences reflected in the sources they explore and the questions they consider
  • Analyze a variety of sources from multiple perspectives to deepen their understanding of long-standing issues and one another
  • Generate and discuss questions to better understand a perspective, make generalizations, and/or draw conclusions
  • Make informed decisions about current issues to be productive members of society
  • Communicate ideas and conclusions effectively, using evidence with integrity

Our Instructional Approach

We are committed to teaching students how to think and not what to think by…

  • acknowledging the historical past and recognizing that society is defined by the tension between freedom and safety, the need for space for both innovation and tradition, and the ethics of right and wrong.

  • developing our students as effective researchers, critical thinkers, and communicators by broadening their background knowledge of the world, both past and present, and growing their capacity to contribute to our ever-changing global society.

  • providing equitable access to high-quality instruction, resources, and opportunities to learn.
