Additional Gifted Services Screening
The Gifted Services department offers courtesy General Intellectual Aptitude (GIA) screening sessions for private school, home schooled, and new-to-the-system students who are entering 1st-12th grade in the 2023-2024 year. Parents should call the Department of Gifted Services at 757-591-4566 to pre-register a child for testing. This screening is for placement for the 2023-2024 academic year. Test session arrival times will vary depending on the assessments needed. As part of the pre-registration process, parents will be notified of the time to arrive for the test session.
For rising 1st-2nd grade students, the gifted screening process includes: an aptitude test, a parent evaluation of gifted characteristics, a teacher evaluation of the student’s gifted characteristics, and a review of the student’s academic grades.

The spring and summer testing dates will be offered at the Newport News Public Schools Administration Building. Pre-registration for these test sessions is required. Please call the Gifted Services Department at 757-591-4566 to schedule a test session. Students must be pre-registered 1 week prior to the testing date. The testing dates are:
- April 19, 2023
- June 21, 2023
- June 29, 2023
- July 21, 2023
- Additional dates may be added if needed
Transfer, military dependent, and new to the system students will be considered as soon as referred.
