Construction Progress Update

The Huntington Middle School building site is divided into four (4) building zones, A, B, C, and D. MEB General Contractors, Inc, the Contractor, is developing the building pad in the order of zones C, D, B, and A. The work completed in these building zones are as follows:

Building Zones

Zone “C”

  • Contractor continues to install overhead electrical rough-ins for interior lighting.
  • Sprinkler system has been installed.
  • Installation of overhead ductwork has been installed.
  • Installation of overhead rain leader piping has been installed and insulated.
  • Storm piping cases have been constructed and are enclosed.
  • Installing exterior metal composite panels around the gym exterior is approximately 75% complete.
  • Block-filler applied to 75% of interior walls.
  • Painting above ceiling spaces continues in the gym. Work is not in compliance with the specifications. (Contractor is on Notice).
  • Curtain wall framing installation around gym is approximately 95% complete. No glass has been installed.
  • RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and rough-ins are complete. Waiting on permanent power for equipment start-up.
  • Scoreboards are being installed.

Zone “D”

  • Contractor to continue installation of overhead mechanical, electrical, & plumbing rough-ins are approximately 95% complete.
  • RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and rough-ins are complete. Waiting on permanent power for equipment start-up.
  • Installing windows on East (Courtyard side) is approximately 90% complete and West (28th) street side are substantially complete.
  • Installation of white cap (final layer) of roofing on high roof/education wing is complete.
  • Above ceiling inspections have been completed on the 3-story education wing, and a “re-inspection” is required for final approval.
  • Sprinkler systems have been installed and are waiting on ceiling installations on all three floors.
  • Cable trays have been installed on all three floors.
  • In wall MEP rough-ins are approximately 95% complete over all three floors.
  • HVAC ductwork is approximately 90% complete on all floors.
  • Kitchen hoods have been set in-place, rough-ins are complete and the unit is waiting on permanent power for equipment start-up.
  • Block filler on CMU walls is approximately 90% complete.
  • Contractor is applying prime coats of paint on CMU block walls and are approximately 20% complete on all floors. Appling finish coats of paint “at this time” is in non-compliance with the specifications. The Contractor has been placed on Notice of Non-Compliant Work.
  • Place sealer on mechanical room closets floors, all stories.
  • Electrical subcontractor-is-prepping to install electrical panels.
  • Contractor is installing copper piping in the education wing.
  • Corrective work, contractors have removed fireproofing on structural steel.
  • Moment welds in stairwells are complete, and stairwell installation is scheduled to follow.
  • Equipment in mechanical closets on main corridors are being installed on 1st & 2nd floors.

Zone “B”

  • Brick veneer on plan E (courtyard) wall is complete.
  • Brick veneer on plan N wall (admin area exterior) is substantially complete. Moment welds in learning commons are approximately 80% complete.
  • Scaffolding erection for window installation is approximately 50% complete.
  • Installation of ductwork is 90% complete on all floors.
  • Interior CMU walls “non-load bearing” are complete.
  • RTUs and MAUs on area C roof have been set, and rough-ins are complete. Waiting on permanent power for equipment start-up.
  • Top layer (white cap) of roofing ongoing on high roof/educational wing is complete.
  • Above ceiling inspections have been completed on the 3-story education wing, and a “re-inspection” is required for final approval.
  • Sprinkler systems have been installed and are waiting on ceiling installations on all three floors.
  • Cable trays have been installed on all three floors.
  • In wall MEP rough-ins are approximately 95% complete over all three floors.
  • HVAC ductwork is approximately 90% complete on all floors.
  • Roofing on the low areas of area B is approximately 75% complete.
  • Walls have been framed, insulated and waiting on dry-in for drywall installation.
  • Contractor is applying prime coats of paint on CMU block walls and are approximately 20% complete on all floors. Appling finish coats of paint at this time is in non-compliance with the specifications. The Contractor has been placed on Notice of Non-Compliant Work.
  • Electrical subcontractor-is-prepping to install electrical panels.
  • Structural Steel is approximately 80% complete in the media center area.

Zone “A”

  • Structural steel and cold form framing is on-going in area A.
  • Roof Decking is approximately 80% complete.
  • Structural steel beams & joist are approximately 95% complete.
  • Air barrier on East exterior wall is substantially complete.
  • CMU and Brick Veneer are substantially complete on East Exterior Wall.
  • CMU and Air Barrier installation is substantially complete on North exterior wall.
  • Installation of brick veneer has started on North exterior wall.
  • Metal Stud Walls and Hollow Metal Frames are approximately 95% complete.
  • MEP rough-ins are ongoing in above ceiling spaces and walls.
  • Begin installation of Hollow Metal Doors throughout area A.

Field House

  • Complete installation of interior CMU block walls.
  • In wall plumbing and electrical rough-ins are complete.

Site Work

  • Site utilities are complete in the Courtyard.
  • Base pavement in the parking lot has been installed. Some soft substrate areas were observed by the design team.
  • Contractor is installing under-drains for parking lot.
  • Contractor has cut track and football field to grade.
  • Football field substrate being installed for turf.
  • Contractor is running conduits underground to field house.
  • Contractor to run conduits to site poles and athletic poles.

Utilities

  • Storm water installations are complete across and down 30th Street. On-site storm water piping is approximately 85% complete.
  • Water: MEB has received drawings from Newport News Waterworks and is currently working on installation. All NN Waterworks fees have been paid. check and FDC and are pending the waterworks design prior to continuation.
  • Water: Contractor to begin water line installation from Wickham to rear entrance of school building.
  • Electrical: Transformer has arrived on the jobsite. Secondary conduits are being feed cable. Transformer to be energized in July 2026.
  • Gas: Gas meter locations have been provided for the owner and confirmed by the design team. The City of Newport News has submitted a work order and application to Virginia Natural Gas. VNG has confirmed the meter locations and is scheduling a contractor for the gas line install across Wickham to the meter location (installation TBD).

Overall Completion

  • Overall Completion is 61% complete.
