Middle and high school students representing each secondary school in Newport News participated in the school division's Engineering Design Challenge March 22 at Crittenden Middle School.

Generating the Future was the theme of the problem they were presented to solve for the competition. Students did not know what the challenge was until it was given to them with the materials needed for the build at the start of the time period allowed to complete it.

Competing in groups, they were tasked with building a wind turbine.

Place winners in the Junior Division for middle schools were Gildersleeve Middle School in first place; Point Option Middle School in second place and Passage Middle School in third place. In the Senior Division for high schools, Heritage High School earned first place, Menchville High School second place and Achievable Dream High School third place.

Dominion Energy served as NNPS' community partner for the event. The Engineering Design Challenge is part of the school division's ongoing STEM education initiative emphasizing skills in science, technology, engineering and math.

This school year's first Engineering Design Challenge was for fourth and fifth grade students and took place February 2. The final one for this year will be second and third grade students on May 10 at 10:45 a.m. at Newsome Park Elementary School.
