Please review Frequently Asked Questions.

As we approach the start of the new school year, we have an important message about changes to school schedules and bus stops for 2025-2026. In order to shorten bus routes and decrease student time spent riding to and from school, several schools will have new start and end times for the school day. Also, the walking distance where no student transportation will be provided and to bus stops will be slightly increased for students at all grade levels.

With teaching and learning as our primary goal, it's important that we maximize students' time during the school day. These changes will go a long way towards improving that by getting students to school and back home more quickly.

The following are the new school day start and end times for the schools that will have changes:

  • Hidenwood Elementary School 9:20 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.
  • Kiln Creek Elementary School 9:20 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.
  • Sanford Elementary School 9:20 a.m. to 3:55 p.m.
  • Huntington Middle School 7:10 a.m. to 1:55 p.m.
  • Passage Middle School 8:10 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.

Newport News Public Schools has also changed the procedure governing walking distance to bus stops or the student's school of attendance. The current maximum walking distance of 0.4 miles for students to reach a bus stop or school they attend will be increased to 0.5 miles for preschool and elementary school students and 0.7 miles for middle and high school students.

Increasing the walking distance will allow for the consolidation of bus stops, reducing the total number of stops needed and cutting down on bus travel time.

Bus stop information, including locations and pick-up and drop-off times, will be available in ParentVUE and StudentVUE, and posted online later in August.

We appreciate your support as we implement these changes to improve transportation efficiency for our students and their families. Your partnership is important to the success of these new plans.
