NNPS Telecom program to offer dual enrollment with ODU
Posted: September 3, 2025
Newport News Public Schools Telecom students will receive college credit for their courses starting this fall under a new partnership for dual enrollment with Old Dominion University.
The NNPS Administration, Telecom Supervisor Ray Price and Telecom crew member Brandon Hedgepeth, who is a Telecom graduate and former Telecom-ODU intern, have added dual enrollment to the many reasons the Telecom program is attractive to NNPS students. The program, which is one of NNPS' many Career and Technical Education programs, provides students with two years of hands-on experience in all aspects of television production.
"This will prompt students to sign up," said Price, adding that it provides students a head start on their college careers while saving time and money.
Rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in the Telecom program should contact their guidance counselors to sign up for the courses.
Telecom's previous dual enrollment agreement with Norfolk State University expired a couple of years ago. College credits will now be able to be earned once again, this time through the partnership with ODU.
Additionally, Telecom will provide internships for ODU students, which will be mutually beneficial.
"This will be a great opportunity for current and future Telecom students," Hedgepeth said.
"Having been both a Telecom student and ODU student, I know that this dual enrollment program is just the beginning of this partnership. This will truly provide students a new opportunity to enhance their education."
Students who complete the two-year Telecom program can earn six college credits through ODU. They will receive three credits for TV-I Intro to TV Production their first year and three credits for TV-II Directing their senior year. The credits will be elective credit.
"This will bring Telecom to another level," Price said.
