Newport News Public Schools Youth Development hosted its 6th Annual RISE! Male Empowerment Conference on February 7 at Heritage High School.
Hundreds of students in grades six through twelve attended the conference to interact with numerous mentors, subject matter experts, and other supportive adults throughout a day of special guest presentations, 25 interactive workshops, and activities. This year's theme, "The Blueprint: Building the Best Me," emphasized important topics such as leadership, goal setting, decision making, entrepreneurship, violence prevention and prioritizing mental health.
RISE! regularly connects local leaders, including those from community organizations, churches, schools and the business community, with male empowerment clubs for students in grades three through twelve that meet monthly in most NNPS schools. School-based RISE! male empowerment program coaches, mentoring coaches, and the Youth Development team present the annual conference for students to convene and network with positive male role models and to explore healthy approaches to everyday issues.
Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones made remarks as the event kicked off. Former Mayor McKinley Price, City Council Member John Eley, Newport News School Board Chair Dr. Terri Best and Board Member Gary Hunter, Hampton School Board Chair Dr. Richard Mason, Newport News Police Department Assistant Chief Eric Hires and Newport News Fire Department Captain Andre Dorsey were among those in attendance.
Marquis Hill, a nationally recognized motivational speaker, author, and entrepreneur for more than 20 years, delivered the keynote address. His powerful message emphasized dreaming, taking action, self-love and prioritizing mental health. Hill also made inspirational presentations to students who aspire to be entrepreneurs in special breakout sessions throughout the day.
Families and adults in attendance received information at eight empowerment workshops of their choice on various topics focused on strengthening parenting skills and promoting youth thriving. The event also featured breakfast and lunch, games and giveaways.
